Gogo banana beef!

Foodpairing has nice little maps of which foods pair well with which other foods. They made one mistake though. The only thing that coriander pairs with is the goddamn bin!

I'd keep root beer in it.

Generally speaking I'm opposed to novelty-style designs. These root-system carafes from Etienne Meneau are kinda nice though.

Nanoterrochnology?

How are you feeling about nanotechnology? Any sense of creeping terror? No? Maybe now would be a good time to read about the potential dangers inherent in using a technology which we don't have a full framework of understanding for.
Grind gold down to nanoparticle size and it starts reacting, silver at that size acts as an antibacterials, carbon acts as...?

Zoom in... now enhance!

Most of these interface technologies have been kicking around for a while but it's nice to have them all in one place. Lots of cool 3d interfaces and some dorky table ones.

I'm all for turducken, possibly because I've never actually tasted it. I'm not sure I'm all for turducken for cats, though I see Merrick also does "Grammys' Pot Pie" for cats so I guess if you're buying your cat this sort of food it's probably a goner anyway.

eBook readers: Don't worry they'll be out of the news soon

I don't know why everyone is ripping into the Kindle. Sure it seems kinda crappy in some ways but you get free internet access forever! Sooner or later someone will hack it and you can just buy one then use your lappy anywhere, free.
Here's a comparison of readers anyway, in case the hype makes you think you want one.

God forbid I act as some sort of piracy-enabler. I merely include this link: PickyPirate as an interesting example of web technology. Someone has taken metacritic top-scorers and provided a link to the torrents for these titles. It's interesting, no?

Melody-road? I'd rather a melody-pop

Ahh melody roads, what a delight. By using small grooves cut into the road at specific intervals a Japanese company is using your car to play melodies. The grooves make the car vibrate at various frequencies which can play out a tune if you're driving at the ride speed (hopefully the speed limit). Too fast or too slow and the music's either in fast forward, or is chopped and screwed. Sounds great, though it would suck if your daily commute included a song you hated.

Scopolamine, good times unlikely

Scopolamine is a drug which can be obtained from plants in the nightshade family. Its basic claim to fame is the complete elimination of free-will: whilst on the drug you'll be open to almost any suggestion and will willing comply with any proposal. This is a touch terrifying.

Valve's captured stats about player performance in Half-life 2 Episode 2. I'm particularly interested in the death locations - how great! Even more fascinating would be a site you could go to after completion of the game to check out your personal stats and then compare them to others.

Chow down, wide load

I don't get Krispy Kreme's popularity, their donuts just aren't that nice. Too sweet, too... fatty. It's like they've forced sweetened sugar into lard, then shaped it into donuts.
That said, if you like Krispy Kremes you can score 6 freebies the day after the election if you register here: Krispy Kreme | Election 07. I'd vote Lemoncrats, purely because the name cracks me up.

Round sound

Though it looks more like a terrifying, sentient, golf ball monster, the La Sphére speaker from Cabasse, is (apparently) a superb high-end speaker. Its spherical design is said to help reduce distortion due to rigidity, it’s also got perfect symmetry and no diffraction which is “…the very essence of the spatial conherency”. Awesome.
At US$150,000 a pair, I don't think I'll be struggling to find a lounge decor to compliment the Olympic rings-meets-small death star styling.

RCRD LBL, short on vowels, long on free music

RCRD LBL appears to be an evolved mp3 blog. As far as I can tell various music labels post up mp3s of their artists for free download, hopefully generating a sale for the whole album. Nothing too different from current mp3 blogs about, except for the label support. The next step is where things get interesting: advertising revenue pays the bands for the songs they have for download, meaning that end users get free music but the bands still get some monetary support.
At present the site seems to have a few downloads but mostly streamed content. I'd like to see an entire album available for download from an ad-supported page. Come on Art Brut, come on, Justice!

This is what it sounds like when... Prince is a dick

Who doesn't love a good photoshop? Prince, that's who. The nasty little man's lawyers have served infringement notices to some users of b3ta.com for photoshopping Prince for a competition on the site. He's been working his way around the net attempting to "protect" his copyrighted images from all and sundry (including, of course, those evil fan-sites).
I think I'll switch from Purple Rain to Chocolate Rain.

Australians best in the world! (at being the worst polluters)

Australians, per capita, are responsible for more CO2 being expelled into the atmosphere than any other country. We’re emitting five times more than China and almost 20% more than the US, which is in second place.
Carbon monitoring for action (carma.org) has undertaken a study of more than 50,000 power plants and their emissions. Our American cousins are releasing the most CO2, 2.5bn tones a year, but Australian power stations are the least efficient on a per capita basis giving us the worst reputation.
I’m thinking it might be time to switch the lights at your place for green bulbs? Ride a bike to work? Carpool?

Bridgers burning bridges

The US women's bridge champions have thrown the volatile world of professional bridge into uproar! It's always the way - you can't turn around at a bridge club without starting a fight...
Obviously folks are saying it's inappropriate to make political statements at a non-political event. According to the women involved they had copped a fair bit of static from other competitors due to Senor Bush's foreign policies.
